Summary: do promiscuous gorillas wash their hands before picking bananas?

han's (elvis tsui) gang rob an armoured car, but one of their team is captured by a rookie cop, wong (aaron kwok), who then witnesses han raiding a police station to free his captured partner. after such a brazen attack on the police, inspectors ma and liu (leung kar-yan and lau ching-wan, respectively) are drafted in to solve the case, with wong and hsi (kingdom yuen) being volunteered to provide back-up. however, wong finds himself distracted by min (fanny yuen), a karaoke songstress who may just be ...

it is by no means great, but i really found myself enjoying this: kwok isn't terrible, yuen is always watchable, whilst leung and lau make a reasonable pairing. oh, and elvis tsui is in good form. there's a nice mixture of fun, comedic elements and some pretty good action sequences, care of jackie chan's stunt team, thrown in for good measure. 'the shootout' doesn't really excel in any area, but neither does it let you down; and, in the end, what you get is a very watchable affair...

fun...

Summary: Decent action/drama

Aaron Kwok plays a rookie cop who is in hot water after a suspect in an armored car robbery he is transporting to the police station is killed. Kwok is then teamed up with the odd couple of Lau Ching-Wan (badly dubbed in) and Leung Kar-Yan to go after the leader of the robbery gang, Elvis Tsui.

The Shootout is a mixed bag. Lau and Leung have good chemistry together, but aren't onscreen nearly enough. Elvis Tsui makes for a good villain -- when he's actually in the picture. Instead, we get a lot of Aaron Kwok's wooden acting, which makes some of the exposition scenes painful to watch.

The film does thankfully have some solid action sequences -- but there aren't nearly enough of them to raise The Shootout above the realm of the average.

Summary: Watch this movie for Tsui, Mak, and Chan's stunt team..

Forget about the awful script and the miscasts, just watch Micahel Mak Dong Kit's style during the action scenes, while Jackie Chan's stuntmen add intensity to the gun fights. The underrated Tsui Kam Kong plays an intense villain with a precise trigger and powerful gun. Beside sthat, this movie is painful to sit through.

Summary: The Out-Shoot

Ready your aim, partner:

Aaron Kwok is a rookie police officer who is present when a group on motorcycles brazenly free their comrade from a prison van, killing one officer. When two high-ranking policemen, Lau Ching-Wan and Leung Kar-Yan call for assistants, he and another lady police officer unwittingly volunteer themselves. Meanwhile, a motorcyle gang lead by Elvis Tsui are killing people left right and centre.

Fire!:

This is an action-fest, with lots of gun shootouts, blood and explosions. The storyline isn't bad either, it's a little lightweight but it works. It was also interesting to see three actors when they were still in the stage of establishing themselves in the industry-Aaron Kwok, Elvis Tsui and Lau Ching-Wan.

The acting on the whole was decent. The little "odd couple" moments between Lau Ching-Wan and Leung Kar-Yan in the beginning were a little too forced and strained but apart from that it was generally fine. Elvis Tsui was good as the nasty, menacing villain. I don't know what happened to Lau Ching-Wan's voice (if it was him, well, it sounded like him), as it sounds like he has his testicles squeezed quite hard throughout.

And yeah, the action. WHAM! BAM! Za-BOOM! For a film that looked a little budgetted, they were done well. The climatical fight was nice. No John Woo stuff here, just good old, gritty shootouts.

Ka-pow! A fun film to watch. 6.5/10

An armored car with two million dollars worth of banknotes onboard is hijacked at Hong Kong's international airport by a gang of four--three men and a girl. It is one of the best orchestrated heists in memory. Bombs and guns are used to stop the car -- and disarm the guards. A jeep is used to take the loot while two motorcycles provide mobility and decoy. But even the best laid plans can go awry.
