News Attack

Trying to tread the ground of journalism-based dramas like All the President's Men, Samson Chiu's 1989 release News Attack does everything compently enough, but in the end, the results are a bit pedestrian, tired, and unexciting, making this an entry really only of interest for hardcore fans of Andy Lau who want to check out one of his earlier film roles.

Summary: Original concept

A film that is much better than it sounds. It sounds like a gangster film, but it's actually about news reporters. It is a comedy, but some of it is not funny, but stupid. Andy Lau plays 'Turbo' who is a photographer who doesn't care about the situations that he takes photos of, as long as he gets paid. Kit (Miu Kiu) is a more serious reporter, and finally Wilson Lam plays 'Chung' who is learning his way in the media world.

Although not the greatest film ever made, it is quite good, a fresh look at Cantonese cinema in the late eighties. It is very hard to track down though, I have never found the VCD.

Surprisingly good movie about three reporters who attempt toexpose the truth about a crooked businessman. Although the three have very different styles -- one is a daredevil, one is strait-laced, and one is an innocent -- they are united by the common goal of reaching the truth. The film even goes so far as to question the justifiable role of a reporter, and provides some very powerful scenes to keep you interested.

Summary: NULL

Three newspapermen -- a relaxed veteran, a dare-devil photographer (Andy Lau), and a cub reporter (Wilson Lam) -- cover Hong Kong like a blanket, but it's Lam who falls for an ice-goddess society woman. There's some male bonding, a boring adventure or two, and a concept of journalism that straddles the boundary between the fanciful and absurd.
