Summary: quite a mess...

alfred cheung plays lung, a wise-cracking taxi driver who is obsessed with tv newsreader jenny tung (maggie cheung). when the opportunity comes to provide jenny with a scoop, lung jumps at the chance. from this moment on, lung starts calling jenny out to less and less news-worthy incidents until, after being demeaned by jenny's slimey boyfriend, he stops his pursuit of her.

then after withdrawing from his circle of friends, he hatches a plot to win jenny! unfortunately, this is where the film turns from a quite charming, entertaining film, where you could empathise with lung, into a big daft slab of random silliness. it does appear as if they just ran out of ideas (almost exactly at the hour mark) and decided to go with anything that came to mind. strangely, after being initially disappointed by this rather ludicrous plot twist, i did warm to the stupidity and ended up enjoying the film overall. oh, and sandra ng has a great role as a tom-boy friend of lung, who is secretly in love with him.

daft, but i kind of forgive it...

In spite of its English title, this is actually a black comedy about obsessed taxi drivers and cannibal serial killers. Alfred Cheung plays a guy fixated on reporter Maggie Cheung. To get her attention, he brings her to various crime scenes. When a killer starts terrorizing the city, he becomes her #1 source of information. So...is there a connection between him and the killings? This movie has a lot of funny stuff (including a contest between taxi drivers to see who can speak the most English) and some excellent plot twists. Maggie Cheung and Sandra Ng are good as usual. My main complaint is that Alfred Cheung isn't much of a protagonist- he's pretty lackluster and not even good-looking. Stephen Chow or Tony Leung KF in nerdy mode might have been better choices. Still, In Between Loves is really a fun movie.
