Dirty Tiger, Crazy Frog!

Summary: A prelude to greatness...

Dirty Tiger, Crazy Frog! is an above-average kung fu comedy, mostly driven by the star power of its two leads, Lau Kar-Wing and Sammo Hung.
The plot is somewhat throw-away, centering around a chain-mail vest that allows it's wearer to resist sword and weapon attacks to the torso. The armour changes hands a number of times, with the characters utilizing tricks and backstabbing tactics to get the piece under their control.
The real draw to the film is the stellar cast and their ability to choreograph and execute elaborate action and fights. Similar to their work in Odd Couple, Hung and Kar-Wing have amazing ability in weapons and showcase this with a couple of blistering fight scenes featuring staff vs. staff (which morphs into a 3-section staff duel) and their open hand scene teaming up against Lee Hoi-Sang. The fights are also filmed with a minimum of cuts, proving even more their superiority at the craft.
Definitely recommended as a worthy addition to the kung fu comedy genre, as long as you are willing to tolerate the slapstick nature.

I will grant that, for the most part, I am not a fan of the comedic style employed in most Hong Kong films, especially that used by Karl Maka and Dean Shek, who seem to inspire headaches rather than laughs through their incessant mugging and use of elements like fast-motion and sound effects that would be more appropriate for a Road Runner cartoon than a live-action movie. Thus, sitting through the comedic exposition scenes was kind of a chore for this reviewer, with the only few laughs generated from Sammo's versatile facial expressions. So once Dirty Tiger, Crazy Frog got to the fighting, as good as those scenes were, they just couldn't fully overcome the hole of mediocrity the movie had already dug for itself.

Summary: Pretty good Sammo Hung movie

This movie was funnier than I expected but I wasn't 100% satisfied with the fight scenes. Some of them are pretty standard, while others are simply great, which leaves a bitter taste after watching it.Sammo and Lau Kar-Wing are both excellent screen fighters but I advise watching Odd Couple, which was made a year later, instead. It has basically the same cast but the choreography was better and quicker. Still, Dirty Tiger, Crazy Frog is a lot of fun but don't expect too much in terms of fighting and you'll have a good time......................7,9/10

Crazy Frog (Sammo Hung) comes across the 'Invincible Armor', thought lost for decades, and manages to steal/swindle it out of the old lady that owns it. Dirty Tiger (Lau Kar Wing) is employed to bring him back, but once he learns of the armour he comes up with a different plan. He's not the only one - once word of the armour's discovery is out, every man and his monkey seems to want to get it. The most serious contenders are a bandit family led by a white-browed former Shaolin Monk. The movie is a non-stop series of crosses, double crosses, thefts and swindles as everybody tries to get the armour or at least some money out of the situation.

This is one of those movies where everybody is a thief and a conman, and the difference between the good guys and bad guys is mainly their degree of stupidity - though by this criteria, Crazy Frog would probably be the worst of the lot :) The different plots & subterfuges employed are quite amusing - mainly due to their stupidity. There's quite a bit of kung fu employed, with Sammo and Lau Kar Wing both showing off some great skill. Most of the fights are played for laughs though, with more "gimmicky" choreography than realistic fighting techniques. All very much in the old-school Peking Opera style too.

Not the best old school movie, but not a bad one. Definitely worth seeing if you like Sammo and Lau Kar Wing.

Not sure what version Yellow Hammer saw, but there didn't appear to be anything missing in the Mei Ah DVD - the ending made perfect sense to me :)

Crazy Frog (Sammo Hung) has 'run away' from his wife and is out about the
town gambling. Multi-Hand Chick (Meg Lam Kin-Ming) pickpockets someone and gets Crazy Frog to protect her. She lures him into her house, whereupon she steals his prized possession, his Invincible Armor. Meanwhile, Crazy Frog's very ugly wife enlists Dirty Tiger (Lau Kar-Wing) to bring him back home. Upon meeting Crazy Frog, Dirty Tiger decides to help Crazy Frog get back his Invincible Armor. The two team up and go through many obstacles to try and get back the Invincible Armor.

A pretty funny movie, with lots of acrobatic kung-fu by both Sammo and Kar-Wing. The ending of the movie though makes it seem like you missed something in the movie.
