After a very entertaining long opening credit sequence with a Sam Hui-like theme song, the film starts with a series of fart jokes. The movie is essentially a collection of comedic sketches (14 in all) preceded by title cards with names such as: “Morning exercise”, “Jaws”, “Getting Fired”, etc . It is reminscent of the old Benny Hill shows (including the use of undercranked camera for comedic effect) but without the benefit of any T&A to liven up the interest. The plot tying it all together is Master Q’s attempt to woo his boss’ secretary, Chan, played by Li Ching. Master Q, meanwhile, is pursued by a fat country cousin. Chin woos another girl, Lin, and Potato develops an interest in the cousin. Potato is missing from most of the middle section of the film. Young Chin barely resembles the cartoon character that I vaguely remember from my parents’ old magazines. The old comics never struck me as all that funny to begin with, but this effort at ‘going live’ is even less so. Probably, the problem is the film is too literal an attempt at translating the comics into film.

Upon reflection, kids might easily enjoy it more than adults. The humour is quite low: farting, pissing, a lot of physical humour involving objects like doors, chairs, typewriters, paint, dumping bowls of noodles on heads, etc. Master Q also displays his kung fu skills and wields a mean pair of nunchukus. Potato (or more likely, a stuntman) does take an impressive fall from a second story window. I’ll admit that I did enjoy the movie a bit more after viewing it in smaller doses using FFWD to skip through the duller parts.

One unintentional piece of humour occurs at the end of the film in the final segment titled “Stealing the Groom” When the fat cousin and Li Ching both vie for Master Q the scene erupts into a very major brawl. In one shot, you can see a stunt man’s wig fly off his head as he takes a dive through a sedan chair.

The film ends with a reprise of the opening song introduced by a title card reading “A Merry Time” and Master Q promises, “We’ll resolve more issues next time.”

Watch with no expectations going in and you'll enjoy it a lot more.
