Reviewed by: hkcinema Date: 12/21/1999 A drama with a slasher movie mentality, Ford's REMAINS OF A WOMAN nevertheless has a strong sense of style and propulsive energy that leaves the viewer impressed but not enlightened. The prolific Carrie Ng (twenty-two movies in 1992 alone) gives a powerful and hypnotic performance as an obsessive lover haunted by jealousy and fear; she deservedly won a Golden Horse Award. The flashback-within-flashback narrative tends to be confusing, and the film finally degenerates into a DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS-like revenge thriller, but much of it works nicely. All in all this is Clarence Ford's most mature film to date, with at least some substance and depth and an emotional gravity lacking in his other films. [Reviewed by Thomas Muething]

Reviewed by: hkcinema Date: 12/08/1999 A man who was accused of murdering and dismembering one of his two lovers gets a retrial thanks to public support mustered by a female Christian social worker. His other lover who received the same sentence anguished over her testimony in the coming trial. Told in sometimes jarring sequences of flash-backs before the crime, Clarence Fok is successful in spotlighting the physical attractiveness of his leads (almost angelical beauty) and contrasting it to their debauched and banal lifestyles. Neither a true psychological thriller or an erotic one, Fok shows greater maturity in story-telling here than his previous works. The movie is unfortunately weakened by mundane comical violence near the end. Note: Carrie Ng won the 1993 Golden Horse Best Actress Award for her role (she has four entries for the award that year.)
