An engaging musical fantasy.

Siu Ming’s chance encounter one stormy night with the spirit of Judge Luk turns out to change his life. Judge Luk turns out to be a benelovent spirit and gives Siu Ming a new heart and associated new strength. Siu Ming (Law Kim Long) passes an examination and becomes a captain of guards. Yuk-Shan, Ming’s wife, gets a new head, to replace her own which is unattractive due to a large bump, a mole and a deformed nose. Meanwhile, Ming has started cavorting with the saucy Tsui Yuk (Lee Heung Kam) after attaining his new standing. Her head transplant lands both herself and Ming in front of the magistrate when one of his former superiors mistakes her for his own wife. Judge Luk intervenes saving Ming from a beating and in the end all is resolved.

A large part of the story is told through song, so this Jook Sing missed some details of this cautionary tale of getting what wishes for.

The two transplants are executed with crude and simple special effects but quite entertaining nonetheless.
Leung Sing Po is a treat to watch as the mischievous spirit. Tang Bik Wan plays two roles, briefly as Lau Hark Suen’s sickly wife and primarily as Siu Ming’s wife Yuk-Shan.

Based on a story from the Chinese classic Strange Tales From a Chinese Studio.
